The Community Center's Operation

The Community Center is open on the first Saturday morning of the month for a breakfast sponsored by the Community Center. This has become a gathering place for many people in our community. Refer to the monthly calendar for confirmation and changes.  Other organizations may sponsor breakfasts on other Saturdays so be sure to check the calendar.

Town organizations are welcome to use the center for events and meetings. Private parties may also use the building for a modest fee. Use of the building must be scheduled and cleanup is required.

Please contact June Cauldwell  for more information.   To schedule a date to use the Community Center please contact Daphne Sanders.

A Brief History

The Community Center building was originally a Methodist church that sat on the Minnehonk lakeside property owned by the Webber family. In 1993 the building was decommissioned and the Methodist Church planned to raze the building.

Fred Webber believed that the building had too much history to be torn down. Arrangements were made with the church to donate the building to the town of Mt. Vernon to be used as a gathering place for the community. The Webber family would donate the land. Karen Stevens had just finished chairing the town's Bi Centennial celebration and was ready for another challenge. She was asked to head up the project.

A Community Center Committee was formed - Donna Horne, Beverly Olson, Charlene Lockwood, Alice Bloom, Dave Sanders, Fred Webber. Karen Stevens served chairperson. The town advanced the committee $3,000 startup money. The next few years were devoted to fundraising. During that time the committee raised nearly $70,000 to add the kitchen and the restroom along with numerous other repairs and improvements. The startup money also was paid back.
